  1. Vada pav

The ingredients used for this dish are one piece of Ginger, six to seven green chillies, two tbsp oil, one tsp mustard seeds, one tsp cumin seeds, a pinch of Hing, seven to eight Curry Leaves, half a spoon of Turmeric powder, three boiled Potatoes, one tbsp Lemon juice, half a cup of chopped Coriander leaves, for Batter we need two tbsp of Rice Flour, half tsp of Chilli powder, 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder and a pinch of Baking Soda

Boil, peel and mash them potatoes into small pieces. Mix ginger, garlic, and green chilies together in a blender mixer and grind coarsely. Heat the oil, and consequently add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves and coarse ginger garlic paste. Saute until the dish is light golden in color. Add turmeric powder, mashed potatoes and mix the ingredients as per given requirements. Add salt, lemon juice, and coriander leaves, while you mix well.

Take besan, to that add some rice flour, turmeric powder, chili powder, baking soda, salt to taste, and mix well. Add water slowly and make it into a thick batter. Make small balls from potato mixture, dip it in chickpea batter and deep fry until it is golden in color from all sides. Serve hot with pav and garnish with some peanut chutney, tamarind, or mint chutney.

2. Maharashtrian Varan

The ingredients required for Maharashtrian varan is two cups of boiled toor dal, one chopped Onion, half chopped tomato, two tsp garlic, three tsp oil, one tsp mustard seeds, one tsp cumin seeds, a pinch of asafoetida, five to six curry leaves, quarter tsp turmeric powder, three chopped green chillies, coriander leaves for garnishing.

Wash and boil the toor dal until you get three to four whistles. Heat the oil in a pan, and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, garlic and saute till the garlic turns golden in color. Add onion and wait till the dish becomes translucent, add chopped green chilies and tomatoes, while you mix the dish thoroughly, cover the pan and let the dish cook for two more minutes. Finally, add boiled dal, mix the dish well and just bring it to a boiling stage, after which you serve, tada!

3. Maharashtrian Goda Masala

The ingredients necessary to prepare this dish are three tsp of grated dry coconut, three tsp of sesame seeds, twenty dried red chillies, a quarter cup of coriander seeds, four bay leaves, three sticks of dalchini, seven black peppercorns, seven cloves, three Javetri, four tsp of fried onion (optional)

Dry roast the grated coconut and sesame seeds separately, till the seeds are brown in color, add a tablespoon of oil and cook the other ingredients one by one, till they are dark brown in color where a nice aroma arises from them spices. Mix all the ingredients with fried onion and grind the mixture to make a smooth powder.

  1. Sawantwadi Craft

 Sawantwadi is the name of a small district in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The area is known for its lac art, popularly known as the Sawantwadi craft. This craft was introduced in Sawantwadi at the end of 17th century.

As the years roll by, a large number of artisans were brought from nearby places like Goa to Sawantwad. In the modern times, Lacquer ware covers a large number of products, like chess sets, board games, candlesticks, and little dolls. The majority of artisans concentrate on traditional hand painted lac furniture and light fittings.

Sawantwadi craft is divided into three unique categories, namely Chitrakatha, Temple and Ganjifa. In the olden days these handicrafts were used to play card games. Today, they have been reduced to mere show pieces. Once can see these card games being displayed in private collections or in museums. Whatever might be the purpose, products made under the Sawantwadi crafts are still amongst the popular crafts of Maharashtra.

2. Mashru and Himroo Fabrics

What distinguishes Mashru and Himroo fabrics is that they are made from silk and cotton, producing a finished product which looks like satin. The silk and cotton used fro creating mashru and himroo handicrafts are cultivated in Aurangabad. These luxurious fabrics are primarily made for them nobles and royal families. The Himroo is locally known as ‘Kam Khuab’ which means a small dream. The word Mashru means legal. Mashru is mainly used as an undergarment by ladies, for it is considered cheaper than Himroo fabric.

Mashru weaving process is done by weaving silk for the wrap and cotton is weaved for the rest. An estimated length for each wrap is 63 yards, which is designed as the first phase. Once the weaving is completed it is dyed by them local dyers. Normally, one set of the thread reel is dyed at a time. The fabric is washed, folded and beaten with wooden bars when it is still wet. This is done to show the wrap thread clearly. The glazing is given to the fabric with a paste made of wheat flour which is applied to the folds. It is again beaten and pressed with hands. Now, the fabric is ready and at this final stage embroidery works, prints and zari are done.

3. Bidriware

Bidriware is of the authentic handicrafts originating from the state of Maharashtra. The beautiful fabrics of Himroo and Mashru makes this form of art highly enticing, for this fine quality of fabric gets a golden texture due to its impeccable craftsmanship. Bidriwork is differentiated into four different techniques; casting, inlaying, engraving, and finishing, with every single step including procedures more complicated than the ones before.

4. Paithani Saree
