  1. Kashmiri Shawls

kashmiri-shawlThe popularity, and the importance of Kashmiri Shawls, in the handicraft markets of India, is an age old tradition which has been passed down from generation to generation. Kashmiri shawls are in high demand as far as international markets are concerned. The production of these shawls is not an easy task, for it requires a lot of patience and practice, as a result of which the shawls are very soft and comfortable. Colorful threads are used in the embroidery for these shawls, where the raw material is hand-woven, before being properly embroidered. Most of the Kashmiri shawls are made out of three fibers, wool, Pashmina and Shahtoosh. Once the raw material is woven, the shawls are decorated with different motifs and embroidered designs.

2. Jalakdozi Embroidery

Chain Stitch, or colloquially referred to as “jalakdozi” work, is a stitch performed via a hook. The stitch mostly bears long and flowing designs of embroidery on handwoven cloth, which is used as a base for embroidered embellishments. The embroidery is performed on traced out patterns of flowers along with animal and human forms. This famous embroidery is done on rugs, wall hangings, cushion covers, kettle covers and so on, mostly decorating everyday household items, providing them with an ethnic look, along with a defined texture.

3. Namdas handicrafts

Namdas is a unique form of handicraft originating from the valley. These are rugs, which also serve as mattresses, that are less expensive than carpets. Primarily comprising of cotton and woolen fiber, bringing these strands into shape by manually pressing them into desired structures. These rugs are used for covering the floor, which are adorned with chain stitched embroidery on woollen and cotton threads.

4. Kashmiri Carpets

One of the most famous handicrafts manufactured from Kashmir are Kashmiri carpets. These rugs are unique because they are hand-made without any automated manufacturing. The artisans use a silk or a woollen yarn, sometimes even a combination of these two, to make them carpets look truly ravishing and different.

The excellent finishing on these carpets makes them worth every single penny charged for these exorbitantly well-made carpets. Nevertheless, having one such carpet is almost like owning a collector’s edition item. The art of carpet weaving was passed onto Kashmir through them merchants from Persia, which is pretty much self-evident from the designs which have a tint of Persian influence. The colour of most Kashmiri Carpets is subtle, thereby placing them in a league apart from ordinary handicrafts.
